AIやロボットで快適なライフスタイルを
お名前とご出身、起業するまでの経緯を教えてください。
タミル・ブルームです。イスラエルで生まれ、アメリカ北東部で育ちました。
アメリカのニューハンプシャー大学で機械工学を専攻し、宇宙探査やロボット工学に興味を持ち始め、さまざまなクラブに参加していました。
宇宙ロボット工学に興味を持ったことがきっかけで、その分野の研究が盛んな日本に行きたいと考えていました。そんな時、日本の吉田和哉教授の記事を見つけたんです。当時、吉田教授は「Google Lunar X prize」というプロジェクトで、チームHAKUTOと一緒に月に小さなロボットを送ろうとしていました。そこに興味をもって連絡を取ったところ、仙台に来ることができ、吉田教授とも大変親しくなっていったんです。研究内容も仙台もとても気に入りました。
ひと夏仙台に滞在した後はアメリカに戻り、UCLA（カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校）で修士課程に入りました。インターンシップもいくつか経験し、そこでの経験から「輝翠TECH株式会社」は着想を得ています。
UCLAを卒業して日本に戻ってからは、博士課程で強化学習と人工知能を使ってロボットのセンサーデータを大量に取り込み、ロボットに自動運転をさせる研究をしました。
－ Could you tell us your name, where you’re from as well as some background information leading up to the founding of your company?
My name is Tamir Blum. I was born in Israel and grew up in the Northeastern United States.
I majored in Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Hampshire, where I became interested in space exploration and robotics and joined various clubs.
My interest in space robotics led me overseas to Japan, where robotics is one of the most popular fields. That's when I found an article about Prof. Kazuya Yoshida. At the time, Prof. Yoshida was working with Team HAKUTO on a project called the "Google Lunar X prize," which was an attempt to send a small robot to the moon. I was very interested in this project, so I contacted him and was able to visit Sendai for the summer, during which time I developed a close professional relationship with Prof. Yoshida. I really liked his research and the city of Sendai.
I returned to the U.S. and entered a master's program at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). I also did several internships, and my experiences there inspired the idea for “Kisui TECH.”
After graduating from UCLA, I got in touch with Prof. Yoshida and was able to return to Japan for my doctoral program. I did research on how to use reinforcement learning and artificial intelligence to capture large amounts of sensor data from robots and make them learn how to drive themselves.
現在の事業について教えてください。
「輝翠TECH株式会社」はAIロボットの会社です。特に、農家の方々の役に立つようなAIやロボットを開発し、人と一緒に、または人がいなくても作業ができるような技術を提供しています。
まずは、自動搬送で農家の収穫作業を支援します。例えばリンゴの場合人が収穫して仕分けするのが一般的です。収穫したリンゴを人が手押し車やトラックで運びますが、ロボットなら同じ作業を基本的に人を介さずに行うことができます。自動搬送で農家の人手不足を解消し、肉体的な負担を軽減したいと考えています。
次に、このロボット技術を他のサービスに発展させたいと考えています。例えば、草刈りは非常に単調で大変な仕事です。ロボットが代わりに草刈りをすることで、農家の方々がもっと農業を楽しんで、かつ利益が出るようにしたいのです。
さらに、ロボットで農業に関するデータを収集します。
例えば、これまで各農家でそれぞれ選んでいた農薬や肥料も農家毎のデータを収集し活用できれば、どんな農薬や肥料がベストなのか知ることができます。また、肥料や農薬の使用量を減らすことで地球環境にも配慮できるようになればと願っています。
また、集めたデータを流通現場に提供すれば、流通もより効率化でき、農家と流通両方のコストが削減できます。
－ Could you tell us about your current business?
Kisui TECH Co. Ltd. is an artificial intelligence robotics company. In particular, we develop artificial intelligence and robots to help farmers, as well as provide machines that can work together with or without people. We have divided our business into three phases.
The first phase is to support farmers during the harvest season with automated transportation. In the case of apple harvesting, the most common method, for example, is for people to pick and sort the apples themselves. Until now, humans have had to use wheelbarrows, small cars, or trucks to move apples, but robots can perform the same task without human intervention. In this way, we hope to help alleviate the labor shortage and at the same time reduce the physical burden on farmers.
In the second stage, we would like to develop the same robot technology and use it for other services, such as mowing grass and spraying pesticides.
Mowing the grass, for example, is a very repetitive and difficult job. We hope that we will be able to enjoy farming more and make it more profitable by having robots do the work for us.
In the third stage, the robot will start collecting data.
We hope to use the data to determine what kinds of pesticides and fertilizers should be used on crops. We will be able to collect data from various farmers and get a consensus on what is best for them.
While helping farmers in this way, we are also thinking of providing the collected data to the supply chain. Therefore, we can avoid time- and energy-consuming tasks, as well as work more efficiently in the distribution field.
We hope this will increase farmers' income, reduce costs for both farmers and the supply chain, and help the global environment by reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides.
新型コロナウィルス感染症拡大により、仕事にどのような影響がありましたか？
会社設立時は既にコロナ禍だったので、お客様とはオンラインや電話によるやりとりが多くなりましたね。少し感染拡大が落ち着いてきてからは、何度か対面で日本のピッチイベントに参加しました。正直なところ、オンラインでのイベントは時間の節約にもなるしストレスも少なくて気に入っています。僕はロボットを開発する方が好きなんです（笑）。
－ How has COVID-19 impacted your business?
The establishment of the company coincided with COVID-19 and winter, so we communicated with customers mostly online or by phone. After the spread of the infection subsided a bit, we participated in a few face-to-face Japan pitch events. To be honest, I kind of like online pitch events because I think they save time and are less stressful. Pitch events are great, but I prefer developing robots (laughs).

－ What has been your experience using Assista?

今後の展開を教えてください。
2021年には、自動運転の実証実験をはじめることができました。福島の家族経営の農家と青森の大手農家2社に協力していただき、実証実験を行いました。
2022年は、秋の収穫期に農家の方々にパイロットプログラムを実際に使っていただき、どれだけ効率が上がるかを測定したいと思っています。
2023年には、実際にお客様にサービスを提供し始め、そこから着実に成長していきたいです。
－ What are your future business plans?
In 2021, we were able to start an automated driving demonstration experiment. In particular, we cooperated with a family farmer in Fukushima and two large farmers in Aomori to conduct an automatic transportation demonstration experiment.
Starting in 2022, we would like for farmers to actually use the pilot program during the fall harvest season and measure how much their efficiency has increased. We would like to actually start providing the service to customers in 2023, and then we will grow steadily from there.
